Cyber Safety Tips for the Home

  • Place any computer connecting to the internet in a place that is visible to the whole family.

  • Talk to your child from an early age about the Internet, ask them about their experiences, and express your concerns.

  • Explore the web with your child.

  • Set clear rules and expectations about appropriate and inappropriate behavior on the computer.

  • Give clear guidelines about sharing private information

 

 

Resources for Keeping your Child Safe Online

  • Connect Safely - This is a site for parents, teens, educators, and advocates engaged in and interested in the impact of the social Web. The site includes a wealth of information for learning about safe, civil use of Web 2.0. There is also a forum designed to give teens and parents a voice in the public discussion about youth online safety. ConnectSafely also includes social media tips for teens and parents, the latest youth-tech news, and many other resources. http://www.connectsafely.org/

  • Texas Education Agency Internet Safety - Texas Education Agency has developed and made available to school districts a list of resources concerning Internet Safety. There are links to 3 types of pages which are for students, educators and parents. Within each of the pages are links that categorize different aspects of Internet safety and digital citizenship to educate and inform.

  • The Texas School Safety Center - The TxSSC was created in 1999 by Governor George Bush and authorized by the 77th Texas Legislature in 2001 to serve as a central location for school safety information, and to provide schools with research, training, and technical assistance to reduce youth violence and promote safety in the state.
